Guidelines for pictograms for toilet bowl cleaning devices and spray seats
These guidelines were created for the purpose of improving the convenience of use and to contribute to the peace of mind and safety of the users of toilets. They should be followed and appropriately used by not only members of the Japan Restroom Industry Association but also domestic and overseas businesses of the same industry. Additionally, these guidelines were created not as restrictive regulations and rules but instead were created to encourage more business to quickly adopt and popularize these standards in the market.

1.Motive for Establishment
These guidelines are a summary of the operation pictograms to be displayed on toilet bowl cleansing devices and spray seat main units etc., and the objective is by having not only members companies of the Japan Sanitary Equipment Industry Association, but also domestic and overseas business operators of this industry to appropriately use these guidelines, improve the convenience for the users of the toilet provide peace of mind and safety to users.
Additionally, these guidelines are not regulations or rules that indicate restrictions but are standards that business are encouraged to adopt in order to quickly promote market penetration.
The seven types of operation pictograms shown in these guidelines were devised by the dedicated team of the "Japanese Toilet Hospitality Project", established by the Japan Sanitary Equipment Industry Association, which was announced to the public on January 17, 2017.
The copyright of the operation system pictograms is owned by the Japan Sanitary Equipment Industry Association and performs the maintenance and management of such.
2.Terms of Use
These operation pictograms may be used without the permission of the Japan Sanitary Equipment Industry Association.
The guidelines should be followed when used.
Note that the Japan Sanitary Equipment Industry Association will not be responsible for any loss of reputation or loss of profit relating to the adoption of these operation pictograms even if businesses related to products or parts suffers any such loss.
3.Scope of Application
These guidelines are applicable for operation pictograms of toilet bowl cleaning devices and spray seats for general households and public facilities toilets.
4.Definition of Terms
- a)Toilet bowl cleaning device
- Cleaning device that is used for flushing waste inside the toilet bowl.
There are various operation systems such as levers, buttons, touching, and sensors. - b)Spray Seat
- A device that cleans the affected area after use with heated water sprayed from a nozzle stored behind the toilet seat. There are other types that may include various additional functions such as deodorizing, drying wet affected areas, seat warming, toilets that include built-in automatic waste flushing and music playback functions, etc.
- c)Operation
- Actions taken by the user to operate the product.
- d)Operation Unit
- Part where buttons, etc., for the operation are located.
- e)Operation Pictogram
- General term to describe the pictograms in the toilet concerning the toilet operation to avoid confusion of the use of the toilet.
5.Use of Operation Pictograms
The use of the operation pictograms are as in Table 1.
Note that the "Functions Name" explains the function of the pictogram and is not the specific name of the pictogram transcribed on the product.

6.Design of Operation Pictograms
The designs of the operation pictograms are as in Table 2.
Note that the "Functions Name" explains the function of the pictogram and is not the specific name of the pictogram transcribed on the product.

7.Display of Operation Pictograms
- 7-1. Subjects for Display
- The subjects for display of the operation pictograms can be displayed on the operation unit of the toilet bowl flushing device main unit, the operation unit of the spray seat main unit, the operation unit of the remote control device (remote control), the instruction manual, the user manual, the webpages of every company, and in the product catalog.
- 7-2. Display Method
- The method for displaying the operation pictograms may be an arrangement of the only the pictogram on the operating section to be posted or may be together with written text indicating the function name. To accommodate the users, multilingual text, tactile symbols, braille characters, etc. should be provided together and the size, color and arrangement set so as not to hinder the visibility of each.
8.Design Application Policy
Each business operator when adopting the operation pictograms should use them without making any changes to the original designs.
Supplementary Provisions
These “Guidelines for pictograms for toilet bowl cleaning devices and spray seats” will be put in use from April 1, 2017.
The Standard Pictograms can be used by anyone.
